MLK Day

What did you do to celebrate Martin Luther King day? Did you throw a party? Buy a cake? or did you spend the day doing stuff you didn't get done yesterday? It isn't too late to take a few minutes to think about the meaning of today and how it personally affects who you are today and why.

I can't say that I go out of my way to do too much on MLK Day. I don't go out and buy a cake (though that sounds like a yummy tradition to start... ) but I always manage to watch and/or read MLK's speech and take a moment to just think about that speech and what it means to the world. MLK has to be the quintessential American hero, at least in my eyes. He asks for what we as Americans were all promised: freedom and equality. MLK is all about fairness and love and peace, and a person like that is a person I consider to be worthy of a whole day. I can't say that for a lot of supposed American heroes.

The speech itself is also unbeatable. It creates so many emotions for so many different kinds of people. I get chills whenever I read or listen to it. So, while I don’t buy my friends and family tons of presents on MLK day or cook special dinners and desserts and sing songs, I do have a genuine appreciation for that day that exceeds materialism.

I wonder how others feel about MLK day.
